Mount Sinai Innovation Showcase 2020

 

On February 13, 2020, the finalists of the 2019 Mount Sinai Health Hackathon and two wild card teams shared their compelling technology solutions at the annual Mount Sinai Innovation Showcase. Prior to the Showcase, teams were mentored by Mount Sinai advisers to strengthen their presentations and learn the fundamentals of business development, customer validation and funding.

  • Deliberate – Improving psychotherapy quality of care through confidential recording and analysis

  • George – AI-based scheduling algorithm to reduce wait times and improve clinical efficiency for hemodialysis
  • Deep Brain Precision – AI-driven programming with wearables for DBS treated Parkinson’s patients
  • VulcanGrip – Universal adapter that allows individuals with limited hand dexterity to use sports and recreational equipment
  • EqualEyes – Combination of eye tracking with EMG to interact with buttons, peripherals, and other input devices for performing tasks

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon 2019

The 4th annual Mount Sinai Health Hackathon took place on October 11-13 2019. It was an exciting 48-hour transdisciplinary competition focused on creating novel technology solutions for problems in healthcare. This year’s theme was Artificial Intelligence – Expanding the Limits of Human Performance.

Mount Sinai Innovation Showcase 2019

Prior to the Showcase, teams were mentored by Mount Sinai Innovation Partners (MSIP) advisors to strengthen their presentations and learn the fundamentals of business development, customer validation and funding.

 

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon 2018

The 3rd annual Mount Sinai Health Hackathon took place on October 19-21 2018. It was an exciting 48-hour multidisciplinary competition focused on creating novel technology solutions for problems in healthcare. The theme was Rare Diseases.

  • Walk Thru – Re-invention of the walker for patients with Huntington’s disease with a portable accessory to facilitate getting through doors

  • Eye Can Do – Smartphone-based eye tracking technology for immobile patients to interact with connected devices in a smart home environment

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon 2017

Mission Statement

 

The Mount Sinai Health Hackathon: harnessing the power of collaboration to advance experiential team science

The mission of the Mount Sinai Health Hackathon is to:

  • Immerse participants from diverse disciplines in multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams and foster experiential learning through communication, collaboration and problem solving
  • Cultivate an environment for participants to develop the skills and knowledge for creating technology solutions to address the needs and unique challenges of the healthcare environment
  • Promote a healthcare innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem at Mount Sinai and beyond
  • The Mount Sinai Health Hackathon is intentional in its efforts to bring together individuals from diverse educational institutions, including, Schools of Engineering, to advance clinically impactful technology solutions.
 

Guidelines and Additional Information

Participant Roles

Our event is open to anyone regardless of prior hackathon experience or any technical expertise. During registration, participants are asked to choose one or more “Roles” that identifies their areas of interest. These Participant Roles help facilitate transdisciplinary team creation. Color-coded name tags are provided during the event to identify participants’ areas of interest. Below are the categories available at registration:

  • Clinical – healthcare patient-centered requirements, outcomes and feasibility

  • Bioinformatics & Biomedicine – biomedical design, population health, and data science

  • Software – software design and development

  • Hardware – hardware design and development

  • Product Experience – creating user-interface and user-experience designs of the solution

  • Business – marketing and business development
Project Evaluation

Projects are evaluated based on a wide variety of criteria and can vary based on the type of solution that is being presented, such as hardware or software. Overall, the criteria are as follows: Design, Technical Sophistication, Novelty, Impact, and Business & Market Viability. Each criteria will be scored on a scale of 1 (Poor) to 10 (Excellent) and will be used to evaluate all project submissions.

Advisor Prospectus

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon is now seeking Sinai-affiliated clinicians and researchers to participate by acting as advisors and presenting a current problem related to human performance that can be addressed by artificial intelligence.

Clinical/research advisors in this event can contribute in the following ways:

  • Present Mount Sinai Health Hackathon organizers with a description of a problem of clinical and/or scientific relevance
  • Work with Mount Sinai Health Hackathon organizers to frame the problem as a technical challenge, to be posted on the website prior to the event
  • Interact with interested Mount Sinai Health Hackathon participants prior to and during the weekend event to answer questions and guide teams working on your challenge
  • Serve as a judge/panelist for evaluating the proposed solutions on the final day of Mount Sinai Health Hackathon
  • Participate in a pre-Health Hackathon event in September &/or early October to educate prospective participants about ideas or problems in human performance that lend themselves to novel solutions &/or viable prototypes using artificial intelligence

Registration Process

During Summer, we will open a link to our registration site that will be available at the top of this page. There is a $10 registration fee to participate at the event that is paid during online signup. Prospective participants who wish to wait to sign up in-person during the event may be subject to additional fees. All participants must accept and adhere to the participation agreement. The agreement highlights and details many important characteristics of the event such as participant eligibility, judging criteria, and intellectual property.

Sponsor Prospectus

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon is now seeking sponsors to participate by providing financial support, technical resources, and/or mentorship for teams participating in the event.

Mount Sinai Health Hackathon has developed the following sponsorship opportunities:

Event Sponsor – Sponsors will provide financial support for Mount Sinai Health Hackathon to offset the costs of running the event.

Technology Sponsor  – Sponsors will provide equipment, software and technical advice during Mount Sinai Health Hackathon. Each Technology Sponsor will provide mentors for a Technology Station at the event and be given an opportunity to give a brief presentation about their technology.

Sponsors can participate in either or both of the above sponsorship opportunities.
